In yet another move aimed at China, US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that bans transactions with eight Chinese apps. It also cited the recent steps taken by India to ban more than 200 Chinese connected software applications.
These eight apps include Alipay and WeChat Pay, and have been banned to "protect America's national security".
President Trump's order said action is needed to "deal with the national emergency" caused by the "pervasiveness of the spread" of apps created and controlled in China, news agency PTI reported.
The eight Chinese apps that have been banned by this executive order are: Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and WPS Office.
The ban order against them will come into force in 45 days starting Tuesday.
"The pace and pervasiveness of the spread in the United States of certain connected mobile and desktop applications and other software developed or controlled by persons China, to include Hong Kong and Macau (China), continue to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," Donald Trump was quoted as saying by PTI.
In his executive order, trump reportedly added that at this time, "action must be taken to address the threat posed by these Chinese connected software applications".
This order follows two others that Trump had signed in August that banned dealings with the popular video app TikTok as well as the main WeChat app.
